Magpie (2017)

by Tom Craven

/

about

‘Magpie’ was originally recorded as part of 15 tracks for the studio album ‘LETTER/DIARY’ in 2011 with members of The Chapter and friends of Matt Parisi in Brighton. The track was re-recorded in 2016 with Lauren Merrifield, Sophie Ray and Joshua Saunders.

"The track itself is one of my strongest with simple, yet thought-provoking imagery, and has always been as subversive as it is beautiful. It’s a song about my friends – an ode to the ups-and-downs we have as our friendships rollercoaster out of control, for good or bad. I personally see it as a very optimistic song."

The video was filmed on location at Salcey Forest in August 2016 and High Elms Manor in September and October 2016.

lyrics

VERSE 1:
Once
Seven times a charm
Bodies of evidence
Universally

Oh it’s just me
And a million different people
Who disagree
Who disagree
With you

CHORUS:
Sure as a star knows how to fall
You hit the ground
From standing tall
Take a look around and you will see
Looking over your shoulder
It is me

BRIDGE:
But I didn’t see it coming
And neither did you

VERSE 2:
Oh the words
On the lips of your friends
Not the usual threats
Now hollow to the bone

Oh it’s just you
Alone with no other people
To see the shame that hides inside you

CHORUS:
Sure as a star knows how to fall
You hit the ground
From standing tall
Take a look around and you will see
Looking over your shoulder
It is me

Like a magpie caught on a branch
The captivity of this old man
The way Toby Keith was unleashed
And the taming of Johnson and his legendary beast

BRIDGE:
Well I didn’t see it coming
And neither did you

MIDDLE:
Neither did you
Neither did you
Neither did you

CHORUS:
Sure as a star knows how to fall
You hit the ground
From standing tall
Take a look around and you will see
Looking over your shoulder
It is me

Like a magpie caught on a branch
The captivity of this old man
The way Toby Keith was unleashed
And the taming of Johnson and his legendary beast

END:
Well I didn’t see it coming
I didn’t see it coming
I didn’t see it coming
Coming for you
Coming for you
We’ve got nothing left to lose
Coming for you
